Navigating Early Parenthood: Managing Sensory Overload & Mental Health

How do you support the transition into life after birth for parents with neurodivergence?

The shift into postpartum is a profound identity change that can be particularly intense when navigating autism or ADHD. Parenting in those early weeks often involves significant sensory overload—from sleep deprivation to the constant physical demands of a newborn—which can deeply impact your nervous system.

Without a neuro-affirming plan, these triggers can heighten the risk of mood and anxiety disorders. My approach ensures you have a systematic strategy to manage your sensory needs and executive-functioning during the postnatal period, allowing you to focus on bonding with your baby while protecting your mental health.

Whether you are planning to deliver at a hospital in Málaga or elsewhere, the experience of pregnancy through postpartum often brings unique mental health challenges for neurodivergent parents. Standard childbirth advice rarely accounts for executive-functioning struggles, sensory overload, or the impact of sleep deprivation on mental health.

As a perinatal specialist, I help expecting parents prepare for labour and early parenting with a set of tools that is inclusive, compassionate, and rooted in lived experience.

Why Neuro-Affirming Parenting Support Matters

For neurodivergent people, medical settings can feel systematic and overwhelming. Bright lights, night shifts, and overstimulated environments can heighten the risk of mood and anxiety disorders.

My neuro-affirming approach helps you manage:

  • Sensory Needs: Creating a Sensory-Safe childbirth plan to prevent Sensory overwhelm.

  • Executive-Function: Breaking down the routine of pregnancy and parenthood into manageable steps to avoid burnout.

  • Systemic Barriers: Navigating Spanish healthcare providers and protocol when there is a gender bias or general lack of understanding for ADHD and Autism.

The Three Paths to Empowerment

1. The International Advocacy Path

Navigating the Spanish healthcare system as a multicultural parent requires specific support. We will discuss how to communicate with your midwife or care provider about induction, caesarean, and meeting the needs of your family in a foreign language.

2. The Neuro-Affirming Path: Supporting ADHD & Autism in Birth

Focused on the autistic and ADHD parenting journey. We create a birth plan template that accounts for sensitivity to medical settings and helps you prepare for the postnatal period.

3. The Trauma-Informed Path

For those likely to experience depression and anxiety due to past trauma, we focus on perinatal safety. We ensure your birthing team understand how to protect your mental health throughout childbirth.

Person-centred & Perinatal Support: Why Work With Me?

My approach to perinatal care is built on four pillars: Person-Centred Care, Neuro-Affirming Care, Coaching, and Cultural Sensitivity. As a qualified Mental Health Counselor with a Bachelor’s degree (Academie voor Coaching en Counselling), I combine clinical insight with my specialised BIA Doula Training (Amsterdam, 2018). This training has allowed me to aid new parents throughout pregnancy and be part of their birth stories, equipping me with a unique set of skills to provide a bridge between medical safety and emotional support.

My practice is deeply inclusive and was born out of my own lived experience. Having navigated childbirth and early parenting in the UK, the Netherlands, and now Spain, I understand the systemic challenges many parents face when their sensory needs or mental health are overlooked by standard healthcare providers.

I have spent years refining a toolkit to help neurodivergent parents and survivors navigate the perinatal journey. My training in 3 Steps Rewind for birth trauma resolution and Supporting Neurodiverse Birth (UK, 2024) allows me to help you prepare for labour while ensuring your autonomy is protected. I am here to ensure that your birth is not just a medical event, but a compassionate, neuro-affirming experience where your voice is the most important one in the room.

FAQs

Does it matter where in the world I am?

1

Not at all. This is a virtual-first intensive designed for multinational parents globally. While I have deep expertise in the Dutch and Spanish healthcare system for those in Málaga, the tools, sensory planning, and survivor-focused strategies we develop are universal. Whether you are navigating the NHS in the UK, a private clinic in the US, or a home birth in Amsterdam, these skills apply.

6

I’m not "officially" diagnosed with ADHD/Autism. Is this for me?

2

Absolutely. In this space, self-identification is fully valid. If you struggle with sensory overwhelm, executive function, or feel that standard birth advice doesn't "fit" your brain, you are in the right place. We focus on your lived experiences, not a clinical label.

How does the 7-day WhatsApp support work?

3

Professional Ethics & Standards

Following our 120-minute session, you will have a direct line to me for one week. This is perfect for "brain dumping" thoughts that come up later, asking follow-up questions, or processing your feelings after a hospital tour or midwife appointment. I respond to voice notes and texts Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm, typically within 4 hours.

What is the "3 Steps Rewind" method?

4

Why is the session paid in advance?

It is a gentle, survivor-focused process used to help individuals move past difficult or traumatic birth experiences. If you have a history of birth trauma, we use these tools to ensure your upcoming birth plan feels like a "reclamation" of your power rather than a repeat of the past.

As a specialised coach and counsellor, I dedicate significant time to reviewing your intake questionnaire and preparing your custom Empowerment Toolkit before we even meet. Paying in advance secures your spot on my calendar and allows me to begin the high-level prep work required for your session

As a graduate of the Academie voor Coaching en Counselling, I strictly abide by their professional Code of Ethics. This ensures that our work together is: Respect, Integrity and confidentiality, Equality versus dependence, Boundaries, Competence.
